COMPLICATIONS AND RELATED DISEASES
The first complication of SIBO is malnutrition : proteins, carbohydrates and fats are not properly absorbed, which causes deficiencies, including iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, calcium deficiency and deficiencies. fat soluble vitamins – Vitamin A, D, E and K deficiency.
These deficiencies can lead to fatigue. Pay special attention to vitamin B12 deficiency , which is more prevalent than thought … and can cause irreversible damage to the nerves.
Several diseases are associated with SIBO; diabetes, diverticulitis, crohns, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis, scleroderma, depression, chronic fatigue … the list is very long. See the list of all diseases.
A study has made a 100% correlation between rosacea and patients who suffer from SIBO. The study followed these people for 3 years, and found that in people who treated their SIBO this greatly improved their rosacea. Read the Rosacea article for tips.
According to one study, the use of levothyroxine or hypothyroidism significantly increases the risk of someone having a SIBO.
TEST! TEST DO NOT GUEST
SIBO is greatly underdiagnosed. Unfortunately, there is no perfect test because the small intestine is a hard place to reach. The most commonly used tests are breath tests measuring hydrogen and methane levels for 3 hours. You take a sugar (glucose or lactulose) and then breathe in a test tube every 20 minutes for 3 hours. This test can be done in your living room, quiet at home.
Unfortunately, these tests have fairly high rates of false negatives and / or false positives depending on which type of sugar you use. (This means that the results may be distorted). ( Reference ) The interpretation of the test is therefore very important.
